Operation Spring Break September 19 to October 10, 2014
Targeting the Fatal Five
Queensland Police will be out in force across the state’s highways and roads these school holidays targeting the Fatal Five.
Commissioner Ian Stewart and Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey today launched Operation Spring Break 2014.
The coordinated state-wide initiative aims to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatal crashes over the September and October school holidays.
The road safety operation is designed to direct the community’s attention to offences related to speed, impaired driving, seatbelts, fatigue, driver distraction and other road-related offences.
Commissioner Ian Stewart said police would target these offences to make Queensland’s roads safer for everyone.
“A highly visible police presence will be deployed across Queensland’s highways and roads these school holidays,” Commissioner Stewart said.
During last year’s operation, police detected almost 1,500 drink drivers and issued more than 1,000 infringement notices to people not wearing a seatbelt.
“Police are hoping to see remarkably improved results for this year’s operation,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“This is a whole-of-community issue and our police need everybody’s support to stop people being killed and injured on our roads.
“Drivers should prepare for the school holiday break, plan their trips if they are visiting friends and family, and take regular breaks from driving, at least every two hours.”
Operation Spring Break 2014 will run from September 19 to October 10.
